Lamb's Lettuce Growing Guide

Welcome to the Tortopia Lamb's Lettuce Growing Guide. Lamb's lettuce is a lovely leafy plant that's especially useful for growing during the cooler months. This guide will help you grow fresh, healthy leaves from seed for your tortoise to enjoy as part of a varied diet.

Did You Know?

Did you know? Lamb's lettuce is also known as corn salad and is naturally well suited to cooler weather, making it a useful plant to grow when many summer plants begin to slow down.

How to Plant Your Seeds

  • Fill a pot, tray or container with compost.
  • Water the compost so it is evenly damp before sowing.
  • Sprinkle the seeds across the surface, leaving a little room between them.
  • Cover the seeds lightly with a thin layer of compost.
  • Place the container somewhere cool and bright. Lamb's lettuce generally prefers cooler conditions rather than lots of heat.
  • Keep the compost gently moist while the seeds germinate, but avoid making it waterlogged.
  • Once the plants have developed plenty of healthy leaves, harvest a few at a time and allow the remaining plant to continue growing.

Daisy’s Top Tip

Lamb's lettuce is one of my favourites for extending the growing season. I like growing it in the greenhouse when the weather starts getting cooler, as it can keep providing fresh leaves when some of my warmer-season plants are slowing down.
